Based on 2016 NRMP data, match rates for MD students are generally in the low 90% while DO students have a 80% rate. However students from international medical schools such as Caribbean schools have closer to a 50% rate. “I was looking into residency match rates of DO versus MD programs using the school websites and comparing them to data from NRMP. I noticed that the 2016 data for DO match rate was 80.3% versus 93.8% for MD. When I look at the data from DO schools like Western and Touro, I find reports of 90% to 100% match rates. DO students have an approximately 70% match rate to allopathic residencies, vs. 95% for MD students. Therefore, while DO and MD physicians can practice any specialty, this ability depends on whether or not they’re able to match to their residency specialty of choice. DO participation grows. In the past four years, DO participation in the NRMP Match is up nearly 69%, and the DO match rate is up 5%. In 2014, about 2,740 DO students and grads submitted rank order lists in NRMP and of those, about 78% matched. This year’s Match showed emergency medicine’s strength.
